ProPlays expansion, what about historical players?

With the expansion of proplay, and the continuation of eras, I am wondering if this leaves historical players outside of the radius of potential improvements.

Apparently it was said that ProPlay can’t be applied to older footage/players.

Kevin Cruz noted in his video breakdowns of 2k25 gameplay that there was a stark contrast between the new animations added via pro play, and the Post Moves/Jab Steps that were captured with the previously used Motion Capture technology. He referred to these old moves as looking very outdated in comparison.

Does this mean that players on the historical rosters, who don’t have their movements available in proplay, will be stuck in a previous version of the game, even while they share the court with the modern stars?

Do Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant get signature go to jumpshots? What about AI?

Is it possible, or even preferred, that 2k just replaces all of their animations with current day animation look a likes?

Do you want to see Jordan with DeRozan Sigs if it means avoiding potential eye sores?

I really hope this was considered and that they don't just throw a generic one on all of the historic players. Guessing this will be a community effort via roster updates to get it working right on legendary players by picking the most similar to modern day players though unfortunately.

Re: ProPlays expansion, what about historical players?

Great questions. This is my biggest issue with proplay. The only way I play 2K is I create my own all time superleague. So it doesn’t look or feel right if my legends have outdated movements while new guys look like they’re from a totally different game.

For example, my all time league is about 70% legends and 30% current players. So if my all time Bulls has Zach Lavine moving realistically while Jordan moves jarringly outdated in comparison, that just won’t work for me.

Which leaves the big question, does 2K still refine Mocap, or do they not touch it since all their resources are on proplay. Those who play 2K24, do you notice legends mocap looking any smoother than 2K23 which was the last year 2K HAD to refine mocap cause that’s all the game used? I stopped playing 2K24 right away it didn’t look good and also proplay just didn’t feel fully developed to me in that game just yet.

The good thing with having so many more options now as far as sigs is that we can get closer than we ever have with regular jumpshots being customized - pull-ups are another story but worst case scenario, if you can get as close stylistically as possible, I can suspend a little disbelief.

Think the question regarding how historical players will work is partially answered in this vid around the 1min mark (regarding the go to shot feature at least). Sounds like go to shots for players without pro play are built off of their aggressive breakdown automatically going into a shot.

Could never get the cpu to shoot out of aggressive breakdown moves consistently in 2k24

I’ve tried and tested extensively but to no avail

Unless there is sweeping changing on the AI front (offensively) in 2k25

In particularly, a willingness to shoot out of an aggressive breakdowns, I highly doubt it will be any different in 2K25

Which is unfortunate because many of the aggressive breakdown combos looks great and create space but they always elect to drive instead of shooting (even when Enough space is created to get a shot off)

And it frustrates the hell out of me. Lol

Well Proplay is the capturing tool, it’s not rebuilding the entire structure of animations.

Think about MyCareer where you’ll have someone using Dennis Rodmans movement style, LeBrons dribbling style, Steph’s hesi, John Walls step back and Tracy McGradys shot, these animations still have to operate on the same plane…

I do know 2K still holds motion capturing sessions, They posted some footage of it back in May/June…

Obviously there’s nuance you’re just not going to be able to capture in comparison but it’s not a dip in actual animation quality…

Wait so this has me thinking. IS ProPlay smoother than Mocap in the game? Or is ProPlay simply more accurate to the player it’s taken from, and essentially like using MoCap but by the player itself? Because if proplay is simply the capturing method and on the same plane as mocap, it should in essence not be smoother or “better” than mocap, but simply more realistic to the player himself. Meaning for example, it wouldn’t make Demar Derozans jumper on Jordan make Jordan look more realistic simply because he has proplay, but it would just make him look exactly like an accurate Derozan.

Not sure if I have that right.
