This week, in honor of Black History Month, FRCA would like to honor Clarence Holmes, an inspiring leader, dentist, and activist in the Historically Black Five Points neighborhood. According to the Blair Caldwell Public Library (https://lnkd.in/gPAxEb24), Holmes was the first African-American dentist to join the Denver Dental Society in 1920 when he opened a dental practice on 26th and Welton in Five Points. During the Great Depression, Holmes offered free services to his patients, and for the entirety of his 56-year career, provided oral health access to families in the neighborhood. He was a pioneer for accessible dental care and an advocate for his community. Thank you, Clarence Holmes! We honor Holmes' work by continuing to advocate for accessible dental care for families of Colorado.

In honor of Black History Month, FRCA would like to spotlight two of our Member Centers serving the majority of Black or African American families: Families Forward Resource Center has been serving far northeast Denver and north Aurora communities for over 20 years, making impacts to close the infant mortality disparity gap and improve birth outcomes for African American/Black families. , located in Denver’s historic Five Points community, makes impacts around high school graduation (95%), pursuit of post-secondary education (60%), and elementary grade advancement (100%). At the end of 2023, FRCA Member Centers participated in our Fidelity Monitoring site visit process. During the site visit process, Catholic Charities of Central Colorado shared their Top 10 highlights of the year, including expanding volunteer recruitment, redefining team meetings, developing a playgroup (see video below), and more. Congratulations, Catholic Charities of Central Colorado, on all your great work!
