But officials remained tight-lipped Tuesday on the identities of the people detained and the circ*mstances that brought them to the attention of investigators.

Tampa Bay Lightning acquire the rights to Jake Guentzel on the eve of free agency
- By STEPHEN WHYNO - AP Hockey Writer
The Tampa Bay Lightning got a head start on free agency by acquiring the rights to high-scoring winger Jake Guentzel. The Lightning sent a 2025 third-round draft pick to Carolina on Sunday. The move allows the Lightning to sign Guentzel before he hits the open market on Monday. Guentzel is coming off scoring 30 goals this past season for the Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins. Tampa Bay cleared more than $11 million in salary cap space Saturday by trading away Mikhail Sergachev and Tanner Jeannot. General manager Julien BriseBois said there were many ways he could use the space but that he was not planning to re-sign Steven Stamkos.

- By MOLLY QUELL - Associated Press
Long-serving Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has urged his country to support Ukraine and international cooperation in his final address to his compatriots. He will take over as NATO’s new secretary-general later this year. The new Dutch government has pledged to maintain assistance for Ukraine. ‘A Quiet Place’ prequel box office speaks volumes as Costner’s Western gets a bumpy start
- By LINDSEY BAHR - AP Film Writer
“A Quiet Place: Day One” is making noise at the box office. The prequel earned an estimated $53 million in its first weekend in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. The same could not be said for Kevin Costner’s self-financed “Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1,” which debuted with only $11 million. “Day One” also missed out on No. 1 by a hair. That title again went to Disney and Pixar’s juggernaut “Inside Out 2,” which made an estimated $57.4 million in its third weekend in theaters. The 2024 box office is still down 19%.

Pogacar takes the yellow jersey in the 2nd stage of the Tour de France. Only Vingegaard can keep up
- AP
It took only two days into the Tour de France to show that Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard are in a class of their own. Pogacar attacked from the chasing peloton up the San Luca climb in the second stage of the Tour and only Vingegaard was able to follow him. The move meant that Pogacar took the leader’s yellow jersey from Stage 1 winner Romain Bardet. Pogacar won the Tour in 2020 and 2021 then finished second behind Vingegaard the last two years. Breakaway rider Kevin Vauquelin made it two French wins in two days by winning the hilly stage with an attack of his own on San Luca.

Bulgaria's Orthodox Church elects a new patriarch with pro-Russian views
- AP
Bulgaria’s Orthodox Church has elected a bishop considered to be pro-Russian as its new leader in a vote that reflected the divisions in the church and wider society since Russia invaded Ukraine more than two years ago. Unlike his late predecessor who criticized Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, Daniil has taken the side of Russian patriarchs who refuse to recognize the independence of Ukraine’s Orthodox Church. Growing divisions between pro-Russian and anti-Russian factions within the senior clergy began after some of them attempted to warm relations with the Ukrainian church. Daniil also criticized the expulsion last fall of a Russian and two Belarusian clerics accused of spying for Moscow.

Venezuelans hold rehearsal vote less than a month before pivotal presidential election
- By REGINA GARCIA CANO - Associated Press
Some Venezuelans have cast mock votes in a rehearsal less than a month before the highly anticipated election in which President Nicolas Maduro seeks a third term. The test allows Venezuela’s ruling party to gauge its voter-mobilizing powers, which have significantly diminished during Maduro’s crisis-ridden presidency. The exercise is technically meant to help voters familiarize themselves with the fingerprint readers and electronic voting machines that will be used on July 28. The election is shaping up to be the biggest challenge the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela has faced in its 25-year dominance that began with the presidency of the fiery Hugo Chávez.

- By The Associated Press
College sports in the U.S. has seen scores of schools change conference affiliation over the past century, but the pace has quickened as programs leave their longtime homes in search of more stability and more revenue. This summer, USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington will leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten. Pac-12 schools Stanford and Cal will leave for the ACC. Oklahoma and Texas will leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. The Big 12 will add Utah, Arizona State, Arizona and Colorado. These dramatic shifts will be complete by the middle of August in time for the football season.

German police believe man who climbed arena roof during Euro 2024 game was a would-be photographer

German police say they believe a man who scaled the roof of the stadium as Germany played Denmark at Euro 2024 was a would-be photographer and they don’t have evidence he intended to hurt anyone. Video shown by public broadcaster WDR appeared to show the man being detained among the catwalks and beams on the underside of the Westfalenstadion roof following the last-16 game. Germany won 2-0. Dortmund police say the man had been detained and identified as a 21-year-old from the nearby city of Osnabrueck. Police added that they are currently ruling out a “political motivation”.

An English bulldog named Babydog makes a surprise appearance in a mural on West Virginia history
- By LEAH WILLINGHAM - Associated Press
The English bulldog had never been featured prominently in West Virginia history, until now. Republican Gov. Jim Justice’s 4-year-old pure breed Babydog has joined the ranks of Abraham Lincoln, Civil War soldiers and odes to Appalachian folk music in new murals under the golden dome of the state Capitol. The dog is seen in one of four murals depicting state history. Justice says he was “just as surprised as anyone” to see the dog in the mural. Justice says a committee led by a state official made that decision. Justice is running for the Senate this year and he's made Babydog a minor celebrity in West Virginia during his two terms as governor.

Denmark rulings show how video review at Euro 2024 moved on far from FIFA's original vision for VAR
- By GRAHAM DUNBAR - AP Sports Writer
Video review of soccer referees’ decisions is testing the patience and faith of coaches, players and fans at the European Championship. Just as it has all season in club games. When FIFA tested and shaped the VAR concept in 2016, there were defined goals and promises. Only overturn clear errors. Don't undermine the authority of the match referee. Decisions within 10 seconds. It's not like that at Euro 2024. Denmark had back-to-back overrules go Germany's way in a 2-0 loss on Saturday. Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand says "this is not how football is supposed to be.”

Summer hours are a perk small businesses can offer to workers to boost morale
- By MAE ANDERSON - AP Business Writer
With summer having gotten off to a scorching start, workers across the country may be dreaming of a seaside escape or cutting out early to watch a movie in an air-conditioned theater. For some, that can be a reality. Summer hours – a reduced schedule on Fridays offered usually between Memorial Day and Labor Day – are one way that smaller businesses can stand out to prospective employees in a competitive talent marketplace. Small business owners also say that offering summer hours can help boost morale in the right circ*mstances.

Tim Scott has benefited from mentors along the way. He's hoping for another helping hand
- By JEFFREY COLLINS - Associated Press
Throughout Tim Scott's life, people have offered him a hand to help him get ahead. Now the South Carolina senator is waiting to see if Donald Trump gives him another boost and makes him the vice presidential nominee. Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, is among those on Trump's shortlist to be his running mate. When Scott was a teenager, a Chick-fil-A manager offered him a sandwich, a job, and four years of indispensable mentoring. In 2012, then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley gave Scott's political career a boost by appointing him to an open Senate seat. Scott ran for president this year, but dropped out and is now one of Trump’s biggest backers.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said they set unacceptable conditions for attending the second one in February. Those included demands that Afghan civil society members be excluded from the talks and that the Taliban be treated as the country’s legitimate rulers.

Hungary's Orbán presents a new alliance with Austrian and Czech nationalist parties
- By PHILIPP JENNE and GEIR MOULSON - Associated Press
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has presented a new alliance with Austria’s far-right Freedom Party and the main Czech opposition party, which hopes to attract other partners and become the biggest right-wing group in the European Parliament. Orbán traveled to Vienna Sunday to present the “Patriots for Europe” alliance of his Fidesz party with the Freedom Party and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s ANO party. It comes a day before Hungary takes over the European Union’s rotating presidency for six months. The European Parliament elections in early June strengthened hard-right parties overall though their performances varied from country to country, but left unclear to what extent they would manage to work together.
